Fed Up with Seasonal Food

Seasons are nice. They give you an excuse to vary the grub you stuff in your face. But its not cool when providers of seasonal items suddenly remove gourmet delicacies from their shelves.

Fed Up with food that disappearsWhile all decent grocery stores vary what gets sold to their customers based on “whats in season;” no food provider is more guilty of taking away shelffuls (and entire aisles) more suddenly then Sams. Now its fully understandable why entire rows of holiday wrapping paper, or pallets of Halloween candy dissapear without notice. But I stroll into Sams the weekend after Thanksgiving to get some more Turkey…and it is gone. Of course they still had their normal birds and ready-to-slice-pre-cooked turkeys; but the glorious turkey cutlets which we enjoyed just a few days berfore were no where to be found.

The lords of Sams were so generous with providing us truly healthy, lean cuts of turkey. These cutlets also tatesed amazing, staying moist and tender. But beside being an healthier option then your typical T-Day main and simply being so damn good tasting, these tureky cutlets were cheap….scarily cheap.

But less than a week post Thanksgiving, these beautiful birds were gone. Why…WHY!?! We had been buying these since we first spotted them weeks ago, and they were now reserved a coveted spot in our cart next to the feed-Africa-sized bags of broccoli. Its not like turkey is only eaten on Thanksgiving. I mean it may be more typical of a winter/harvest food, but there were still many, MANY weeks when Turkey can, and should be enjoyed. Walking into Sams to pick up these cutlets and find them gone truly bothered me; the most amazing food products that rock your world and become staple groceries can instantly be taken out of your life (leaving you to deal with unhealthy, bad-tasting, and often expensive substitutes). This also made me learn that we still have much to learn from the squirrels: stock up while you can.
