The Best Kitchen Appliance…PERIOD.

One day a toaster  and an oven decided to have a kid. What they created was something that became more than they could possibly imagine…the toaster oven…a wierd, stunted appliance that seems to be overlooked by so many.

It really is all about synergy…the sum of its parts are so much greater then one could imagine. Taking the capabilities of an oven, and putting it into toaster sized box is a gorgeous feat of advance engineering.

We got a lot of beautiful china, monogrammed hand towels, and other gifts for our wedding. But the single item getting FAR more use than anything else we received is the one I insisted we add to the registery. Ok, I really wanted the Office on DVD, and maybe a new XBox for the wedding, but Mrs. Fed Up was not letting those go on our registery…But there was one item that I HAD to have and Mrs. Fed Up agreed.

After 4 years, our faithful toaster oven is still going strong...this wedding gift gets more use than anything else in the Fed Up kitchen... And it shows, our toaster oven, is covered in grime and has so much food burnt to the insides that you can hardly see the stainless steel of its solid frame. But that is ok, in fact I prefer it this way. Not only do the layers of encrusted food provide unparalleled seasoning and flavor, but it makes our toaster oven look bad ass (like an ATV covered in mud or a scratched up leather jacket).

The Toaster Oven.

Not only does it have economical advantages, by being cheaper than a full-scale oven, and using up less energy to reach the desired cooking temperatures; but it takes up less prime real estate in your kitchen too.

More importantly, there are THREE key reasons why you need to have a toaster oven in your kitchen arsenal:

1. Toaster ovens do not fall into that stereotypical realm of “girly” kitchen things. While men are often associated with grills, and housewives are stuck with ovens; the toaster oven has no stigma or negative connotation that is commonly attached to it. In fact using a toaster oven makes you far more popular. Toaster ovens are from the realm of the bad-ass bachelor and the cool college kids.  Not too many “tough-guys” would brag about the cupcakes they baked in their oven, but you better believe they will  show off their impressive pizza making skills if they roasted the whole thing in their old beat-up toaster oven.

2. Simple rule; buy any appliance made by a power tools manufacturer. This really needs no explanation. Even if the appliance quality is crap, your kitchen “cred” is boosted by having a heavy-duty brand name associated with the cooking tools you use. If they make products capable of hammering bolts through solid iron, or chopping up huge pieces of lumber; then they sure as hell can make a device that can melt the butter on your English muffin (or at lest it will look cool attempting to do so). For a kitchen appliance, toaster ovens can actually look pretty awesome.

Whether the band is the budget-friendly "Black And Decker," or the more heavy-duty " Dewalt," It does NOT matter. As long as your toaster oven has a power-tool name stamped on it, you get kitchen cred.

3. A toaster oven makes you an instantly better cook. Basically you can’t screw up a meal, it is the grown-up version of  Easy Bake Oven. I avoid the large monstrosity of an oven we have beneath our stove top. It has too many dials and it is easy to forget there is crap cooking in there. But a toaster oven sits counter level where you won’t forget it, and is pretty damn simple to operate.

So get a toaster oven if you do not already have one.  Make some melty-cheesy dishes, broil some brussels sprouts and try not to get burned. Now all you need is a spork or two and your kitchen is ready for pretty much everything.

An oven takes up so much prime real estate. The awesomness that is the toaster oven uses no kitchen space whatsoever, looks cooler, is dirt cheap, and can turn water into wine...ok that last one may be an exaggeration. But toaster ovens truly are a sign of how advance our society has gotten. I don't know who invented the thing, but they should get a Noble Peace Prize, or at least a gold star.

My own toaster oven passed away about a year and a half ago. After many years of faithful service, the heating elements started to go, then it was all down-hill.. Sadly my kitchen is roughly the size of a shoebox right now, so counter space is at a premium. I hope (one day) to have a vast expanse of counter top on which I can place another toaster oven. So damn convenient. I miss that sucker.

Toaster Ovens really are under rated.

Love the “grown up easy bake oven!” One day when I have extra counter space I will buy one of these gems!

Thank you for educating the masses on the most useful kitchen appliance ever created! Not sure how I ever survived without one… the days when I reheated pizza via microwave with soggy results (ick) are a distant memory. My husband is a pro chef and he uses our toaster oven more often than the regular oven. I just started a food blog (which can be described as pitiful at best so far) but I hope you’ll check it out @ ACulinaryQuest.wordpress.com and share some tips on gaining followers 🙂 Love the logo, BTW – that is badass.

Ha, thanks for reading and sharing my passion for the Toaster Oven! Glad you like the logo.

    “try not to get burned.”

Impossible. Even the plastic knobs and handles on those things will blister. How do you make plastic that hot?

They are also durable. I accidently started a minor fire in my toaster oven (stupid, not-thinking mistake) and it was completely fine afterwards. I still use to this day (3yrs later) 🙂

3 years and going strong! That is loyal toaster oven. Yep I wish ALL my appliances could last as long as “ole-faithful”

I think Kitchen Stadium chefs would do a better job with a series of four legged sous chefs at their sides, wouldn’t you agree? And they’d make the show so much more fun. – rita

haha. I think we need to ask Food Network to make this their next cooking competition. “Kitchen Creature Cooks”…or “Iron Critter” …. an Iron Chef pet edition would be pretty cool.

Yesss! Toaster ovens are one of the best inventions ever! I bake half pizzas, smaller brownie batches, roast pumpkin seeds, etc. in mine. A toaster is nothing compared to a toaster oven

    • April 4, 2012 at 3:17 pm #

      I agree completely…toasters have nothing on a toaster-oven

  8. April 4, 2012 at 3:05 pm #

Yea, I’d have to agree. My Black and Decker toaster oven finally did give out after 12 years. It was well used and loved. But I like the cooktop on your range in the pic of your kitchen…I could go for one like that. Love your blog!

“Happy wife, happy life”…Mrs. Fed Up wanted a nice kitchen range… But no complaints here.

and wow…12 years of use is impressive even for a toaster oven!

Found my way here from your slightly strange sweet potato concoction post. I have a confession to make to you. I’m sorry but I’ve never owned or actually even used a toaster oven before. I’ve actually had access to a toaster oven at work for the last 18 months since I changed offices, but I’ve still not used it. Part of the reason is that I really don’t even know how toaster oven works, but really most of the reason is that I just don’t usually bring stuff for lunch that needs to be heated in a toaster oven.

You are depriving yourself of tasty, toasted, grub… Half the meals I make come from a toaster oven. For lunch, even if I am just having a microwaved bowl of vegetables, I may use the toaster oven to first roast some cashews or pinenuts to make my lunch just that much better. Of course making an open faced sandwich in the toaster oven can make any plain brown bag sandwich, 100 times better. Today, I plant to toast my tuna wrap to give the exterior tortilla a nice crust and melt the cheese. PLEASE treat yourself to a toaster oven.
