In the Land of Pizza, The Espresso is King

I am simply amazed at the prevalence of espresso here in Italy’s Tuscan region where I have spent the past week. I have traveled a lot throughout Europe, and know that espresso, coffee, cafe, or some other form of boling-hot, highly-caffeinated liquid is frequently drunk in pretty much every EU country. Wheather for a post-dessert drink, or a pre-breakfast treat, a meal in Europe can often seem incomplete without some form of coffee (or tea…but that is another ‘rant’). Our local contacts have to have their favorite beverage at every opportunity…their required coffee-course makes already long, slow meals, even longer and slower.

And while espresso is popular in many countries, I just am stunned at how it frequently it is INSISTED upon in Tuscany. The weather here in the middle of summer is extremely hot… It is the dry sort of heat which leaves you actually craving a ‘brain-freeze’ from a huge scoop of gelato. Yet no matter how hot it gets and what the weather man says, a steaming cup of espresso is a constant on every dining table.

You know there is a slight espresso addiction when even your bus has a small high-quality espresso machine bolted next to the drivers seat. AND, YES… My espresso and coffee-crazed travel companions all thought the bus-made stuff was up to the high taste standards required in Italy…and was thought to definitely beat anything from Starbucks.

haha, I know what you mean, a lot of the coffee in Europe comes from this or that robot machine and varies in quality/enjoyment.

I could live there. In fact, after reading your post, I’m considering moving to Tuscany. Espresso on the go all the time? That’s my kinda town.

Haha… Maybe you could outfit your own car with a mini espresso machine. I bet it would increase the ‘resale value’ of the car.
